April 11 – 16, 2023
Wow, is it already time to hit the road again? The “season” at our winter home in Cypress Woods has just flown by. As usual, it was a busy season with parties, happy hours, Pickleball, and wonderful times spent with friends. Suddenly it was time to shut down our lot, pack up the RV, hook up the truck, and set off for another summer of travel.
And we’re off – but to where? We decided to change things up a bit this summer by spending most of the time at our summer home in Michigan. Consequently, this trip is broken into two parts separated by a few months.
First Stop – St. Augustine
Founded in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States. Forty-two years before the English colonized Jamestown and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the Spanish established at St. Augustine this nation’s first enduring settlement.
Our History
We love visiting St. Augustine especially since we once lived near here. The campground that we like is the Sun Outdoors St. Augustine. We always request a site in the newer Oasis section which has paved big-rig sites.
We did notice a new RV resort – St. Augustine RV Resort – just off I-95 that we may have to check out for next time.
Not only do we enjoy the vibe of the beach-side and the Old Town of St. Augustine, we also enjoy the food. On Wednesday evening we had the pleasure of meeting our friend and financial advisor for dinner at Terra & Acqua. I had the Tagliatelle Ragu while Bill had the Tagliatelle Boscaiola. Both were excellent. Diet? What diet?
A couple of nights later we had dinner at our favorite restaurant – The Collage – with a brief visit to the Barley Republic for a pre-dinner drink. Since we had made reservations months ago, we had no issues being seated on a busy Friday night. We were delighted to find out that our favorite soup – carrot datil bisque – is a regular on the menu now. The tenderloin bruschetta was just as delicious albeit smaller than we remembered. The beef tenderloin looked so delicious that I couldn’t resist taking a bite prior to taking a photo – oops. In an attempt to be somewhat diet conscious, we did skip our usual dessert.
Saturday turned out to be drab and rainy so, since we couldn’t play some Pickelball, we elected to go to a movie. The previews for Dungeons and Dragons looked interesting so we gave it a try. The theatre (which we used to frequent when we lived in the area) could use some TLC. The seats squeaked so badly that you were afraid to move and there was a hole in the roof. The movie was one we probably should have waited to stream at home but it was something to do on a dreary day.
The next day was moving day so we bid goodbye to St. Augustine and set our sights on our next destination.
