Stonewall Jackson State Park

Stonewall Resort State Park is one of West Virginia’s newest state parks. The park and lake were completed in 1990 as a project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which purchased the property to build a flood control dam. The lake and state park are named after Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, who was born in Clarksburg and raised in nearby Jackson’s Mill. — wvstateparks.com

Located just off I-79 near Roanoke, WV, the park offers a secluded retreat along Stonewall Jackson Lake. Within the park are a lodge, cottages, campgrounds, three restaurants, and a wide variety of recreational offerings from boating to golf.

Briar Point Campground

Our campground of choice within the park was the Stonewall Resort Briar Point Campground. This campground has 40 full-hookup sites plus tent sites and mooring sites for boats. Our 30 amp concrete and gravel lake view campsite was level and spacious. And you couldn’t beat the view.

The Lodge

For our initial exploration of the lodge, we took the walkway (first photo) over the lake from the campground. Since it decided to rain while we were there we opted to wait it out with drinks and a flatbread pizza in T. J. Muskies Bar and Grill.

The Lodge became our hangout on a couple of other occasions. Since the wifi in the campground was non-existent, we spent one afternoon in the lobby working on our respective computers.

On Saturday night, we took up residence in T. J. Muskies to watch the Ohio State – Penn State game while working our way through some appetizers. We left the bar with about 8 minutes left in the game as the Buckeyes were playing miserably. Imagine my surprise when I found out later that they actually won that game. Miracles do happen.

Early Departure

We were originally scheduled to leave Briar Point on October 1 but during the course of the trip we discovered a few items on the RV that needed to be fixed. We opted to have the warranty service done at the DRV factory service center in Howe, Indiana and made an appointment for Oct. 1. Since we needed to be at the service center the night before we had to depart West Virginia a day early – kind of a shame since we really liked the resort and campground.

You can read about our experiences in Howe and the conclusion of this journey in the next post.
